Vice President of India (VPoI) Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post over health concerns. On the first day of Monsoon session, he attended the parliament session and in the evening he tendered his resignation.

The resignation, tendered in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution, cites the need to prioritise health care based on medical advice. The letter of resignation, dated July 21,2025 was addressed to the President of India. His term is upto 2027.

In a letter to the President of India, Dhankhar wrote, “I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy. It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor.”

For the first in India, VPoI resigns on the first day of Parliament session. Jagdeep Dhankhar, who assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022, has stepped down from his constitutional post. His term is upto 2027. By virtue of his position, he also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

He is the third sitting Vice-President in Indian history to resign before completing his term, which was to end on August 10, 2027. Previously, VV Giri stepped down from the post of vice president on July 20, 1969, to contest the presidential election following President Zakir Husain’s demise. He then served as acting President and was later elected to the top post. R Venkataraman resigned as Vice-President in July 1987 after being elected President. He had served as Vice-President from August 1984 to July 1987 and went on to hold the presidency until July 1992.

He extended his “deepest gratitude to Your Excellency – the Hon’ble President of India for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure.”
