Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Praksah Chautala passed away in Gurugam at the age of 89.  He suffered a cardiac arrest at his home and was immediately rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

Chautala was born on January 1, 1935 at Sirsa in Haryana and is going to celebrate his 90th birthday on January 1.

Chautala, a seven-time MLA, served as the Chief Minister of Haryana for a record four terms, starting in December 1989, with his final term spanning from 1999 to 2005. He headed the Indian National Lok Dal.

OP Chautala was the son of the 6th Deputy Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Devi Lal. Chautala had last contested and won the Haryana Assembly polls from Uchana Kalan in 2009.

He has studied till Class 10, as per Association for Democratic Reforms data.

Haryana chief minister Nayab Saini shared his condolences with the family and post a message on his social media X account “I am deeply saddened by the demise of INLD Supremo and former chief minister, Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala Ji. I offer my heartfelt tribute to him. He devoted his life to serving both the state and society, and his loss is irreplaceable for the politics of Haryana and the nation. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant strength to his grieving family to endure this sorrow,”

He holds the record for being the oldest prisoner of the Tihar Jail of Delhi (aged 87), before his release in 2020. He was the chief minister of Haryana for record four times.
