The General Insurance Employees Association (GIEAIA) Northern Region expressed strong resentment towards the government’s plan to privatize the insurance sector. The association demanded that the government should intervene to protect the welfare of employees, pending salary revision, and regulatory reforms.

During the meeting of the working committee of the association, Trilok Singh, General Secretary, said that the government’s plan to privatize the insurance sector would have a devastating impact on employees. He demanded that the government should merge the four public sector insurance companies – National Insurance, New India Insurance, Oriental Insurance, and United India Insurance – to consolidate the government insurance sector.

Singh also expressed concern about the pending wage revision for employees, which has been pending for 26 months. He demanded that the government should increase the family pension for employees from 15% to 30%, which is given in banking, LIC, and other state governments.

The meeting was attended by 80 delegates from UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, and northern states. The association has prepared an agitation program against the privatization of public sector insurance companies and 100% FDI in the insurance sector, which will be announced soon.”
