GNDU creates history in sports world by clinching MAKA trophy for record 25th time; VC receives it from President of India

The esteemed Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (MAKA) for exceptional sporting achievements in the year 2022-23 was awarded to Guru Nanak Dev University by Her Excellency, President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. This marks the University’s record 25th win of the coveted trophy for outstanding all-round performance in sports.
At the Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, and Dr. Kanwar Mandeep Singh, representing the University’s Sports Department, received the trophy and a grant of Rs. 15 lakhs from the President. Prof. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon, Registrar of the University was also present.
The ceremony showcased a detailed citation highlighting the University’s commendable sports accomplishments in various national and international championships. Guru Nanak Dev University won the prestigious MAKA Trophy solidifying its position as India’s top sports university.
The Vice-Chancellor attributed the University’s sporting success to the dedication and talent of its sportsmen and sportswomen from campus and affiliated colleges. He emphasized the rigorous training, meticulous selection processes, and efficient administration as key contributors to the University’s consistent high performance at Inter-University, National, and International levels.
Guru Nanak Dev University’s sporting legacy includes nurturing 6 Padmashree Awardees, 36 Arjuna Awardees, 2 Dronacharya Awardees, and 44 Maharaja Ranjit Singh Awardees, a testament to its commitment to sports excellence.
The University will celebrate this victory on January 10 at the Auditorium of Centre on Study in Sri Guru Granth Sahib at 2:00 PM, honoring the contributors, sports personnel, and coaches in achieving this remarkable milestone. Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer will be the chief guest.

Established in 1956-57 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the MAKA Trophy is an annual honor bestowed by the President to recognize a University’s outstanding sports performance at various competitive levels.
Prof. Sandhu conveyed his congratulations to the sports personnel, affiliated colleges, principals, faculty, coaches, and students for their invaluable contributions. He reiterated the University’s commitment to providing enhanced facilities, scientific training, and incentives to groom future sports champions.
