GNDU syndicate meeting held; took key decisions

The meeting of the Syndicate of Guru Nanak Dev University held today in the Syndicate Room of the University.  Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor presided over the meeting while Prof. K.S Kahlon, Registrar presented the agenda. Prof. S.S. Behl, Dean Academic Affairs and members of Syndicate were present to discuss various issues.  Rahul Bhandari, Secretary, Higher Education participated online in the meeting.

While welcoming the members, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sandhu informed the syndicate that Guru Nanak Dev University would confer the degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) and Doctors of Laws (LL.D.). D.Sc., D.Litt. and L.L.D. being the highest research degree of this University, He said that a candidate seeking admission to these programmes, must have pursed or pursuing outstanding research in the concerned dispcipline.  He said that every candidate for the award of this degree must already be a Ph.D. from this or any other recognized University and the candidate must have obtained a Ph.D. form the University atleast three academic years prior to the date of application. The degree shall be awarded only on published work for which no other degree has been received by the candidate. However, all published works shall have to be submitted clearly indicating those parts for which a degree has been received already, he added.

While expressing satisfaction over the exit classes online examinations started today and the results of entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sandhu said that the students who will be absent from the examination for any reason will be given another chance in October-November. Reiterating his commitment to look after the future of every student, he said that the responsibility of evaluating the papers after the examinations has been given to the concerned college.

He said that New course of B.Sc. Microbiology (CBEGS) and M.Sc. (USHS) Economics (Four Years Integrated Course) (CBEGS) were approved by the Syndicate on this occasion. The recommendations to change the nomenclature of the course of MA International Relations (South Asian Studies) to MA International Relation; B.Sc. Agricutlture (Hons.) (CBEGS) to  B.Sc. (Hons.) Agricutlture (CBEGS); M.Sc. (Sports Physiology) to M.Sc. (Exercise and Sports Physiology and Master in Social Work to Master of Social Work were also accorded approval by the syndicate. The addition/amendments in the B.P.Ed. Integrated (4 Years); B.P.E.S. (3 Years) and B.P.Ed. (2 Years) courses were also approved in the meeting, said Prof. Sandhu.

He said that the amendments in the ordinances of LL.B (TYC) an B.A.LL.B/B.Com. LL.B/ BBA LL.B (FYIC) for colleges w.e.f. from 2019-20 and amendments in the ordinances for Lateral Entry Admission for B.Tech. & M.Tech. Dual Degree Programme in different departments of the University campus and its regional campuses were also approved on this occasion. Rename of B.Com Honours with B.Com Honours (Under the Scheme of Honours School) was also approved.

As many as 26 Ph.D degrees were approved in this meeting.

Prof. Sandhu said that MoUs between Guru Nanak Dev University and Dr. Avinash Kaur, Professor (Retd.) was also approved in which three awards entitled Prof. I.S. Grover Memorial Lectureship Award; Sardarni Darshan Kaur and Sardar Ram Singh Memorial Young Scientist Award in Plant Sciences and Sardarni Kuldip Kaur and Sardar Gurmukh Singh Memorial Young Scientist Award in Environment Sciences. would be institute to pay tribute to all her teachers, her parents and prarents-in-law. Apart from this, the establishment of Sandeep Singh Bath Memorial Scholarship was also approved in the meeting.

He also gave details about activities of the University. He said that during this prevailing situation of Covid-19, the University is committed to provide education through various online portals to the students of the University. During this period the online activities includes online teaching, webinars by various departments of University,  online literary collaborations and training workshops, sanitization  of department by taking all essential precautions as per Govt. guidelines.

Prof. Sandhu thanked the syndics and exhorted all to play a pro-active role in the further progress of the University. The members of the Syndicate congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and others for the overall development of the University.
