Govt accepts SJVN CMD’s resignation with relaxation; process initiated to appoint new CMD

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has accepted the resignation tendered by Nand Lal Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director (“CMD”), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) and has relieved him from the post of CMD of the Company with immediate effect.

The Ministry of Power, Government of India in its order dated 31st January 2024 states that, the appointment of Geeta Kapur, Director (Personnel) of SJVN has been approved for the post of Chairman and Managing Director of the company as the Additional Charge.

The assigned additional charge of CMD, SJVN to Geeta Kapur, Director (Personnel) is effective from 1st February 2024, for three months or until further orders, whichever is earlier, it is mentioned.

Meanwhile, the government has also started the process to appoint regular CMD of the Mini Ratna SJVN.

The Haryana government in November 2023 had appointed a former Himachal Pradesh administrative service officer Nand Lal Sharma, Chairman, SJVN as the chairman of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC).

Geeta Kapur has marked a historic milestone as the first female to lead any Hydro CPSE within the Indian Power Sector. Prior to this, she made history in 2018 as the first full-time female Director in SJVN and when she joined SJVN in 1992 she was the first female Personnel Officer to join the company.

In 2008, SJVN was granted the status of ‘Mini Ratna Category-I’ CPSE that resulted in enhanced autonomy in decision making.
