Govt appoints Deputy National Security Advisor as new foreign secretary

Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the name of Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) Vikram Misri as the next Foreign Secretary, a government notification said. Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, will be appointed as India’s new Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15, 2024, succeeding the incumbent Vinay Kwatra.

The government has extended the term of incumbent Vinay Kwatra, (IFS :1988) as Foreign Secretary beyond 30th April 2024 up to 14th July 2024.

Misri, who has served as private secretary to prime ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi, is one of the leading hands on China in the ministry of external affairs. His last ambassadorial posting was in Beijing. Misri was appointed to his position in the National Security Council Secretariat in January 2022.
