In an office memorandum issued by Jitin Bansal, Director (PSU Affairs), to all the secretaries of all ministries, departments of Govt of India, Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSEs) / Autonomous bodies etc. has directed them” to use the network of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) for internet/ broadband, landline/ leased line.”

As per the orders, the department of expenditure, ministry of finance has already approved the same.”

Rajesh, whose father retired from BSNL said” it seems that government is going to support the state-owned telecom giant to help regain its past glory. BSNL, which was formed in 2000, was in the pink of financial health but lost to competition because of inadequate investment in infrastructure expansion, political interference and other factors. The government is still planning to allocate 4G spectrum to them, which is a worrisome factor”

But Kamal, a union  leader said, ” it’s a smart move by the government, before selling the telecom giant to private players. The government is setting the pitch for the private players. Both BSNL and MTNL are going through difficult times as they struggle to compete with the likes of Jio, Airtel and Vodafone.Thousands of employees, particularly from BSNL, have already take VRS.”
