Jallianwala Bagh Chair of the Guru Nanak Dev University has started the lecture Series on the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. Recently, it organized its first lecture which was delivered by Prof. Joginder Singh, former Professor and Chairperson of Namdhari Chair, Guru Nanak Dev University on the theme “ Kulin Varg di Jallianwala Bagh de Katleaam bare drishtikon di charcha”
The speaker’s main argument revolved around how the pro-British kulin (elite) or raees (noble) classes from the major religious communities of Punjab (Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim) defended British actions during the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. These loyalists attributed the British firing on the crowd on April 13, 1919, to the riots that occurred on April 10, thus justifying the British reaction.
Prof. Joginder Singh’s recent work, titled “1919 da Dukhant: Sikhan da Drishtikon, Anubhav and Pratikarm”, based on Punjabi sources was also released on this occasion. It examines the Sikh perspective, their experiences, and their reactions to the events of 1919, providing a regional and community-specific analysis of the tragedy. Review of the book was presented by Professor Sukhdev Singh Sohal, former Professor and Chairperson of the Ghadar Chair, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
