Has Muktsar Sahib Police paid the price for curbing drugs in the district?

In the last few months Muktsar Sahib remained in the news, all for the good reasons-curbing drug menace in the district. The local police in the command of its senior superintendent of police Harmanbir Singh Gill, who has been transferred yesterday, has managed to control the drug menace in the district.
As per available information, the district police in its campaign launched against the drug menace have lodged 365 FIRs under Narcotic-Drugs-and-Psychotropic-Substances (NDPS) act in nine months i.e from January 1,2023 to September 28,2023.
Majority of the FIRs were lodged in the last few months. The district police have arrested 494 accused in the drug related cases. The district police have recovered 5.80 kg Heroin, 27 kg opium, 432 kg poppy husk, 26 kg ganja,65604 intoxicating tablets, 150 syrups, 0.095 gm narcotic powder and Rs 30,54,800 drug money in this period.
Many local citizens, local personalities, NGOs have appreciated the work done by the Muktsar Sahib police in these last few months.
But, in the last few days, the one incident has dented the image of the Muktsar sahib police and that is ‘Lawyer’s Custodial Torture’ case.
Many locals, NGOs, retired Punjab police officials admitted that this incident is going to derail the movement started by the Muktsar Sahib police- curbing the drug menace.
Most of them have an opinion that the guilty, if any in the ‘Lawyers Custodial Torture ‘case must be punished. But changing the top officials including senior superintendent of police (SSP) and the DIG has sent a wrong signal in the police force. Many officers of the Punjab police are now de-motivated and feel cheated.
As per their opinion the drug mafia has won this battle in the district. The mafia is waiting for a favorable moment for them and this incident has proved a boon for them.
