As no one withdrew nomination on the last day of ‘withdrawal of candidature’ for the Rajya Sabha Election Punjab-2022, the Returning Officer-cum-Secretary, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Surinder Pal declared elected Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Vikramjit Singh Sahney as the Rajya Sabha members and handed over them the ‘Certificates of Election’, here on Friday.

One of the major changes in the composition of the Rajya Sabha /Upper House is the big jump in the tally of Aam Aadmi Party bolstered by its landslide victory in Punjab by winning 92 seats out of total 117 seats.

With this election all the seven Rajya Sabha (Upper House) seats of Punjab goes to Aam Admi Party. This is for the first time that not a single candidate of Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, Bhartiya Janta party or any independent candidate is going to represent Punjab in the upper house (Rajya Sabha), since independence.

After having suffered a humiliating defeat in the Assembly elections, the Congress, SAD, BJP they lost the chance to send their representative in the upper house. The state elects 7 members for a term of 6 years. The members are indirectly elected by the state legislators, as done since 1952.

History created in Punjab-AAP outnumbers other parties to reach parliament . Now Harbhajan Singh , Balbir Singh Seechewal, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Sanjeev Arora and Ashok Mittal all representing Aam admi Party will represent Punjab in the upper house (Rajya Sabha).

Later, today both the newly elected Rajya Sabha members Sant Seechewal and Sahney met Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who congratulated them on their elections as Rajya Sabha Members and expressed hope that they will raise the voice of Punjabis in the upper house and work for the betterment of the state of Punjab.
