Hydro units of BBMB and RSD running to utilise stored water

After heavy rains in the catchment areas of Bhakra and Pong, very heavy inflows were received during a few days in the BBMB Reservoirs and Ranjit Sagar Dam.

All the six Pong Power House units are running round the clock in a bid to utilise stored water on the reservoir as the water level in Pong Dam reservoir is increasing sharply due to heavy rainfalls in Himachal.

Pong Power House generated 85.5 lakh units on Tuesday and Pong Dam the water level is 13670.6 feet against last year’s level of 1333.6 feet on corresponding day. In the first five days of August  the water level has increased by 13 feet. At the start of the filling season the water level was 1288.5 feet. At Pong Dam the filling can be done up to 1390 feet.  At Pong Dam the inflow is 93650 cusecs with outflow of 18340 cusecs. The margin left for the danger level   filling level is 19.4 feet.

At Bhakra reservoir today water level is 1635 feet against last year’s level of 1612.5   feet  an increase of 12.5  feet in the last five days  At Bhakra Dam the maximum storage limit followed by BBMB is 1680 feet. The inflow at Bhakra reservoir is  59200 cusecs and discharge of 22300 cusecs. There is still a margin of 45 feet for maximum permissible level. The generation on Tuesday at  Bhakra power houses was 213  Lakh units.

At Ranjit Sagar Dam the water level is  516.8  meters  against last year’s level of 494.24   meters, above by 22  meters.  The water inflow at Ranjit Sagar Dam is   24000   cusecs and discharge is around 10470 cusec . The generation on Tuesday  was 62.6  lakh units.

Weather department (IMD)  had made a forecast that the second half of the southwest monsoon season is expected to deliver above-normal rainfall exceeding 106% of the long-period average  from August to September.
