IEI, Punjab & Chandigarh celebrated “World Telecommunication & Information Society Day“

“World Telecommunication & Information Society Day“was celebrated by the Institution of Engineers (India), Punjab & Chandigarh State Centre on 17th May, 2025 in the premises of the Engineers Bhawan, Madhya Marg, Sector 19-A, Chandigarh.
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), observed annually on May 17th, celebrates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. It’s a day to highlight the importance of telecommunications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for economic and social development, and to address the digital divide.
Er. Rakesh Kapur ITS (Retd.), Life Member ITU – Apt Foundation of India was the “Chief Guest. Dr. Manjeet Singh Patterh, Professor, Punjabi University, Patiala was the Guest of Honour. Er. S.S. Mundi FIE, Imm. Past Vice-President IEI and Prof. (Dr.) T.S. Kamal, Former Vice-President IEI also graced the occasion with their presence.
Dr. Baljit Singh Khehra, Chairman, Punjab & Chandigarh State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) welcomed the members and distinguished Guests.
Key Speakers namely Dr. Surita Maini, Associate Professor, SLIET Longowal and Dr. Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, Associate Professor, NITTTR Chandigarh delivered keynote addresses on the theme “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation” “Chief Guest” and “Guest of Honour” addressed the gathering with their motivational views about the theme.
Er. Karnail Singh FIE, Honorary Secretary, Punjab & Chandigarh State Centre proposed Vote of thanks to all members present in the event.
IEI, Punjab & Chandigarh celebrated “World Telecommunication & Information Society Day“. About 80 Engineers, Guests, Faculty Members and Students attended the function.
ABOUT IEI
The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] is the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers, established in 1920 with its Headquarters located in Kolkata and incorporated under Royal Charter on 9th September, 1935 by the then His Majesty of King George V.
