Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) announced to provide online courses   to students affected by shut down, which has suspended their regular classes amidst scare of Covid-19 (coronavirus) spread. This is first ever attempt of IIT Ropar to record about 150 courses for B. Tech, M. Tech, M.Sc and PhD students and the recorded lectures will be made available using Google Classroom and can only be accessed by the students registered in a designated course.

In phase 1 the recorded lectures will be made available to the students which they can download and play at their own pace and time. This also includes release of assignments. On successful implementation of Phase 1, IIT Ropar will start working on phase 2 which would let the students interact with the faculty in problem-solving.

The lectures would be recorded using screen capturing software. This may include annotated powerpoint or a handwritten script created by use of a tablet, similar to working on a blackboard. This will be released with synchronized audio. Keeping in mind the location and access of Internet across the nation, the recorded lectures will include only content synchronized with audio and not the video reducing the size of the file that can be easily accessible by any student sitting at any corner of the nation.
“For long IIT Ropar is planning to offer online courses using the model of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and this situation demands such an initiative at a massive scale to provide theory classes to students while creating a pool of online lectures. Currently, the courses will be partial solution to cover academic loss.   Faculty of IIT Ropar is enthusiastically supporting this move of online courses which is suggested by the group of Union Ministers in their latest advisory.” said, Prof. Sarit K Das, Director, IIT Ropar.
