In response to the recent reported diarrhoeal cases in certain areas of the district, Deputy Commissioner Patiala Showkat Ahmad Parray convened an urgent meeting with the Municipal Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, all Additional Deputy Commissioners (ADCs) Kanchan, Dr Harjinder Singh Bedi, Navreet Kaur Sekhon, SDMs, the Civil Surgeon Dr Sanjay Goel, and other related departments. DC said on the directions of Chief Minster Bhagwant Singh Mann the meeting focused on implementing stringent measures to tackle the acute diarrhoeal disease affecting the community.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to identify vulnerable areas. Commissioner Corporation, BDPOs, and EOs are tasked with pinpointing locations with a high number of illegal connections or areas with a history of outbreaks over the past five years. These locations will be categorized based on risk levels—high, moderate, and low—and detailed lists will be shared with relevant technical departments and the Civil Surgeon’s office.
ADCs will develop a sampling plan to ensure priority testing for high-risk areas, while the Civil Surgeon will independently collect and test samples from these areas. In cases where E. coli is detected, authorities will be notified immediately. The water supply to affected areas will be suspended, and alternative sources of clean drinking water will be provided. Public announcements will inform residents to use chlorinated and boiled water, and illegal connections posing contamination threats will be identified and disconnected.
The Civil Surgeon will appoint a nodal officer to coordinate efforts, ensure timely communication of positive sample results, and conduct door-to-door surveys to distribute chlorine tablets and ORS sachets. Additionally, patient flow in hospitals and clinics will be monitored to identify localities with rising diarrhoeal cases.
Technical departments will be responsible for collecting and testing water samples from vulnerable locations, ensuring proper chlorination, and implementing remedial measures to address contamination sources. ADCs and SDMs will regularly monitor the situation and resolve any coordination or financial issues, escalating to the Deputy Commissioner as necessary.
