In a first, Army’s Colonel appointed as SSP in J&K police

In a first, the Home Department of Jammu and Kashmir Government has accorded sanction to the appointment of Army Officer Colonel Vikrant Prashar, Shaurya Chakra, from Para High Altitude Warfare School Gulmarg, as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Training and Special Operations, Jammu and Kashmir Police.

“In the interest of administration, sanction is hereby accorded to the appointment of Colonel Vikrant Prasher, Para, High Altitude Warfare School Gulmarg, from Indian Army as SSP (Training) & Special (Ops) in J&K Police, on deputation basis,” says the order issued by Chandrekar Bharti, Principal Secretary to the Home department of Jammu and Kashmir. His appointment was formally sanctioned by the Home Department of Jammu and Kashmir on September 27, 2024, under Government Order No. 444-Home of 2024.  He is to impart military-grade training to the cops in the union territory for fighting militants.

There are terms and conditions as regards the appointment and include the deputation will be for two years and pay matrix and all other allowance as admissible to Army Officers of equivalent rank and status/ seniority, performing duties in UT of J&K. “The salary of the officer shall be drawn against deputation reserve post of J&K Police.”

High Altitude Warfare School

The High Altitude Warfare School is a defence service training and research establishment of the Indian Army. In 1948, the Indian Army established a ski school in Gulmarg that later became the High Altitude Warfare School, which specialises in snow–craft and winter warfare.

In a first, Army’s Colonel appointed as SSP in J&K police. Colonel Vikrant Prasher will assume the role of SSP (Training) and Special Operations on deputation for two years. His salary and allowances will mirror those of equivalent-ranking Army officers, with entitlements including accommodation as per his current rank. This appointment is viewed as a step to enhance the operational readiness of J&K Police, particularly in counter-insurgency and special operations.
