With the incessant rains in Himachal Pradesh and heavy inflow of water in the reservoir of Bhakra Dam lake, the management of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to do a testing of the flood gates of the dam.

In a trial run, BBMB releases small quantity of water through flood gates of Bhakra Dam

“Today, the water level at Bhakra dam touches 1672 against the capacity of 1680.82. So, the authorities decided to do a trial run and planned to release around 8000 cusecs of water through the flood gates. This is in addition to the water released through the power generation turbines. The inflow of water is around 1.85 lacs cusecs of water in the dam, so, the management decided to do a trial run of release a small quantity of water through the flood gates. Whereas, the Board authorities keep an eagle’s eye on the situation. If the inflow of water in the reservoir remains high and water level increases, the board will do the same exercise in phased manner, in coming days with prior intimation to the concerned partner states” said Satish Singla, the secretary of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).

Singla added, ” their is no need to be panicked ,as of now the situation is under control.”

As per sources, the management of the BBMB has taken this step, keeping in mind the Malana dam incident in mind.

Recently, the flood gates of 100 MW Malana II hydroelectric project in Kullu got jammed and even NDRF failed to open the flood gates, to release the extra water. Malana dam was overflowing for few days after its flood gates jammed due to heavy silt influx.

As per available information, the board has lifted the flood gate by one feet so that the water can be released, slowly and regularly.
