International Seminar on ‘1984 in Sikh Memory’ Concludes at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University

The two-day international seminar on the theme ‘1984 in Sikh Memory’, organized at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, concluded successfully. Presiding over the valedictory session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prit Pal Singh expressed satisfaction over the research papers presented and the scholarly deliberations held during the seminar. He stated that the University would publish the presented papers in the form of a book. He further remarked that such seminars play a significant role in creating awareness among the younger generation and help society learn lessons from the past to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The session commenced with the presentation of the seminar report by Dr. Hardev Singh, Dean, Faculty of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies. Delivering the valedictory address, Dr. Pritam Singh, former Professor at Oxford University, discussed the visible and invisible economic impacts of the events of 1984 on Punjab and the Sikh community.

In the online session, the keynote speaker Dr. Gyan Singh Sandhu, Patron of Guru Nanak Institute of Global Studies, Canada, shared his views on the topic ‘1984 in Diasporic Sikh Memory’. He observed that the events of 1984 played a crucial role in uniting and organizing the Sikh diaspora across the world. Prof. Gurcharan Singh, Canada, reflected upon the impact of the 1984 tragedy on the literary world. Dr. Jasvir Singh, Project Fellow at Sikh Education Council, UK, spoke on the theme ‘The Concept of Memory and 1984’ and highlighted the theoretical and historical dimensions of genocide studies.

Prof. Sukhwinder Singh Billing, Dean Academic Affairs, attended the seminar as the Guest of Honour. Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, Head, Department of Political Science, presented the vote of thanks to all distinguished speakers and participants. Faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students from various departments participated enthusiastically in the seminar.
