On the first day of Navratri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the nation a historic gift by launching the next-generation GST reforms. The Prime Minister described it as a “GST Savings Festival” and said that this step will directly benefit household budgets, farmers, students, patients, and entrepreneurs.

On this occasion, BJP National Parliamentary Board Member Iqbal Singh Lalpura addressed a press conference and thanked the Prime Minister and said “With the sunrise on the first day of Navratri, the nation is taking another major step towards the Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign. With the rising of the Sun God, the next-generation GST reforms have come into force.”

He said that under the new GST rates, essential household items such as oil, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, shaving products, ghee, cheese, utensils, baby bottles, and diapers have been reduced from 18% or 12% to just 5%.

He said that the agriculture sector has also received direct relief. Tractors, tyres, drip irrigation systems, sprinklers, pesticides, and machinery now attract only 5% GST.

He said that in healthcare, medical oxygen, thermometers, diagnostic kits, glucometers, and spectacles are now at 5%, while health and life insurance premiums have been reduced to zero.

He said that in the education sector, notebooks, pencils, crayons, maps, and globes are now exempt from GST.

Lalpura clarified that companies and dealers will not be able to block these benefits. GST officers will monitor on a monthly basis to curb profiteering. This will further strengthen consumer confidence in the GST system.

While thanking Prime Minister Modi at the press conference, Lalpura said that Punjab needs self-introspection.

He pointed out that Punjab’s GST revenue was ₹1,936 crore in August 2024, which increased to ₹2,199 crore in August 2025 — a growth of 14%. But compared to smaller states like Haryana and Bihar, this growth is very low.

As of August 2025, Punjab has only 1,82,184 GST registrations, while Haryana has 2,51,762 and Bihar has 3,01,203 registrations.

Lalpura said that Punjab’s over-dependence on agriculture, lack of large industrial hubs, and unclear investment policies are its major economic weaknesses.

He suggested that the Punjab government should bring a new industrial policy to attract large investments, Encourage traders, service providers, and entrepreneurs to register under GST, Provide special incentives to MSMEs and startups.and  Fully utilize the next-gen GST reforms implemented by Prime Minister

Lalpura said: “On the first day of Navratri, Prime Minister Modi has once again proved that his government is dedicated to the welfare of every Indian. Now it is Punjab’s duty to seize this opportunity, learn from Haryana and Bihar, and become a strong, industrial, and self-reliant state.”
