Mark Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau as the Canadian Prime Minister earlier this month, on Sunday called an election for April 28
“In just a few weeks, Canadians will face a critical choice. Either we choose to build a stronger, more united Canada with our Liberal plan, or let Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives follow Donald Trump’s playbook and make divisive cuts” said Mark Carney.
Canadian PM added that “there’s a lot at stake. President Trump’s tariffs would hurt Canadian workers and weaken our economy – but Pierre Poilievre won’t stand-up to him. His slogans aren’t solutions, his anger isn’t action, and his division isn’t strength. Pierre Poilievre is the wrong choice at the wrong time, and it’s going to take all of us working together to stop his divisive politics.”
The election campaign will last five weeks, with 343 parliamentary seats up for grabs. While multiple parties are running, the contest is expected to be a battle between Carney’s Liberals and Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives. The party that secures a majority in Parliament will form the next government.
It’s official: Canada to go for poll in April ; 45th general election of Canada announced. Mark Carney said “to stand up for Canada through this crisis, and to build this great nation. We can control our economic destiny with a plan that puts more money in your pockets. A plan that will ensure your government spends less so Canada can invest more. A plan that builds millions of homes. A plan that makes Canada an energy superpower. A plan that creates new trade corridors with reliable partners. A plan that stands strong against President Trump’s tariffs. And a plan that creates one Canadian economy, not thirteen – because Canada is stronger when we are united, friend.”
