Journalist booked in Sangrur for spreading rumors on social media

Sangrur District Magistrate  Ghanshyam Thori has taken a notice of rumors and fallacious information being spread through social media regarding the positive cases in the district and directed the SSP to take immediate and strict action against people spreading fake information. Following the instructions, district police has registered FIR against resident Jagtar Singh Journalist of village Nagri for spreading rumors regarding false positive case of COVID-19 through his Facebook account.

SSP Dr. Sandeep Garg disclosed that Jagtar Singh has posted false information claiming that a vegetable seller has been resulted positive for Covid-19 in Sangrur. He said that police have registered an FIR at Chhajli police station under section 188 and 505 of IPC, section 54 of Disaster Management Act 2005 and section 3 of Epidemic Diseases Act 1897.

SSP Sangrur appealed the residents to not follow any information unless it is issued officially by the government or district administration. He further added that social media handles have been created by the government as well as district administration and people could prefer to follow these official social media accounts for the accurate information.

“People should also verify the information before forwarding it through WhatsApp and Facebook”, he added.Journalist booked in Sangrur for spreading rumors on social media. SSP said that any person found spreading rumours will also be booked in future.
