Justice Arun Kumar Mishra (Retd.) former Supreme Court Justice, today took charge as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), official sources said.

Justice Mishra stoked controversy, last year in February 2020, when as a sitting of the apex court, he described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “internationally acclaimed visionary who could think globally and act locally” at an international conference.

Even the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), at that time, in a resolution passed , strongly condemned senior Supreme Court judge Justice Arun Mishra’s praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an international judicial conference last week. Such statements “reflect poorly on the independence of the judiciary”, it was said at that time.

The post of the National Human Rights Commission NHRC chief had been lying vacant since justice H L Dattu, ex-chief justice of India, had completed his tenure in December 2020.
