Long power outage at Mata Kaushalya Hospital kept doctors, officials on toes

In a rare incident, a total blackout at Mata Kaushalya hospital, Patiala on Saturday night has brought the availability of power services in emergency to fore. The main civil hospital gets power supply from government Rajindra hospital 66 KV grid and it got affected for hours as the cable at 66 kv grid has developed some defects.
Mata Kaushaliya hospital remained dependent on 5-6 generators for around 3-4 hours as no electricity is supplied from power grid for around these hours in the humid season causing anxiety, tension amongst the patients, attendants, medical staff etc.
As per available information, Mata Kaushalya hospital power got snapped at around 6:30-7:00 pm in the evening and the hospital remained without electricity for around more than 3-4 hours. The fault is rectified at around 11:00 pm and power is restored.
When contacted the medical superintendent of Mata Kaushalya hospital Dr Jagpalinder Singh, he confirmed the same and said “we immediately shifted our power supply to generators and no untoward incident had happened at the hospital during this period. Our team of doctors, paramedics, medical, other staff worked with devoation, caution in this emergency situation.”
He further added that “we immediately arrange the diesel to keep our generators on running condition. ”
“To buy the diesel for all generators, to keep them running for such a long duration has burn a hole in hospitals pocket. This is an extra burden on the hospital ” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
When contacted the Punjab state power corporation limited (PSPCL) officer, he said “a cable fault was detected at Govt Rajindra hospital 66 KV grid from where the power is supplied to Mata Kaushalya Hospital. We acted immediately and transfer the load to another grid. This action had taken our around two hours. During these two hours the power supply remained suspended to the hospital. “

Meanwhile, taking cognigence, chief secretary Anurag Verma has asked the principal secretary power Tejveer Singh to look into the matter and fix the responsibility. In addition to this the chief secretary has also asked the administrative secretary medical education and research Priyank Bharti to resolve the hospital issues on priority.”
