Principal Secretary, water resources, mining and geology department, Government of Punjab has issued an order of changing of 58 divisions, circles of the department.

As per the orders, after the renaming of Punjab irrigation department to water Resources Department, the mining and geology department were added in the water resources department. But, till now the names of the divisions, canals were not changed and all the offices were known as per the projects names. From onward, all the divisions, canals of water resources departments are changed and officers were asked to do the needful and update all the concerned at their own level.

Notably, the Water Resources Department (formerly Irrigation Department) was set up way back in 1849. Over time, the scope and nature of work carried out by the Department have expanded from the construction of Dams, Canals and Drains to cover Operation, Maintenance, Management and Improvement of its existing assets and focus on micro-irrigation and conservation of water, especially groundwater.

Punjab does have a very well developed and interlinked river system and widespread 14500 kms long Canal Systems. The state government had brought all divisions of the Irrigation department under one roof rechristening the department as Water Resources on the lines of the Central government.
