A 34-yr old woman from Fiji has got a new lease of life after she was implanted an ICD- implantable cardiac defibrillator at Ojas Super Speciality Hospital, Panchkula.

Rhoda was suffering from genetic disorder, hypertrophic obstructive  cardiomyopathy. Due to this, her brother and sister had died in their younger age. When she came to know about her illness, she too suddenly started fearing death. Moreover she fell unconscious suddenly on two times.

Dr. Anurag Sharma, Director and Head Cardiology said that ICD implanted in patient will continue to sense her heart beat for 24-hr. If in future, her heart beat gets weak, then pacemaker will try to make heart beat normal by giving her an automated shock like  doing the work of ‘ICU’ in her heart.

Dr. Sharma further informed that when patient got herself checked in Fiji, the cost of treatment was said to be around Rs 40-lakh, which was not in the reach of her family. Then she came in contact with an NGO in Moga, Punjab through someone who contacted Ojas to help her. Out of total cost of treatment, Ojas gave concession of Rs. 2.25 lakh.

Rhoda is now completely healthy and happy with her family.

Meanwhile Ojas has done more than 200 coronary angioplasties and by-pass surgeries since its operation 15-month ago.
