Mining goons have a field day in Civil Hospital, doctors, patients suffer; cross Fir lodged after minister’s intervention

In a first of its kind case, violent clashes broke out between two groups in a Civil Hospital in Punjab.

As per available information two groups clashed over allegations of illegal mining in Makandpur village under Dera Bassi area of SAS Nagar (Mohali) district on Friday night. The clashes reportedly left at least a dozen injured on both sides. Four injured have been admitted to GMCH-32, three at Mohali Civil Hospital and four at Dera Bassi sub-divisional hospital, said Mohali Civil Surgeon Sangeeta Jain.

Initially both groups had a fight in the village itself, resulting in four individuals sustaining injuries. However, soon after, both factions advanced toward the Civil Hospital.

Anil Kumar a victim said ” they are doing illegal mining. The same was brought into the notice of SHO, DSP Brar but no action was taken against them.”

Inside the hospital, doctors, patients saw a free for all kind fight between the two groups-villagers opposing illegal mining and workers into illegal mining business. Both sides attacked each other using furniture, flowerpots, wheelchairs, tables, and other items were hurled at each other during the clash in the hospital. Terrified patients and their attendants fled for safety in the middle of the night.

The situation was brought under control after the police force reached the hospital. “We managed to restore order after a series of intense clashes,” Mandeep Singh, Station House Officer of the local police station, said.

Later, the doctors and staff of Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi announces strike due to insecure working condition in the hospital premises.

Upon learning about the clash, Dr Balbir Singh said that he immediately contacted the concerned Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of SAS Nagar, directing them to take appropriate action against both parties involved in clash.

Mining goons have a field day in Civil Hospital, doctors, patients suffer; cross Fir lodged after minister’s intervention against both parties involved in a clash that occurred at the Civil Hospital, in Dera Bassi, informed Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh here on Saturday.

He said that all hospitals are considered peace zones and any violation of hospital protocols or damage to public property will be met with strict action, regardless of any political affiliation. Violence against any medical personnel and damage to hospital property is a non-bailable offence, he added.

While urging the people to continue seeking medical treatment at Government Health Facilities, the Health Minister assured them that doctors and staff are dedicated to providing services to people. However, he categorically said that any violation of hospital protocols will not be tolerated at any cost.

He said that police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are currently reviewing CCTV footage and gathering statements from witnesses.
