Minister justified increase in MBBS fees; inaugurated upgraded VRDL lab at Patiala

Punjab medical education and research minister OP Soni has justified the increase of fees of medical courses in Punjab. He was in Patiala to inaugurate the newly upgraded viral research and diagnostic lab (VRDL) established by Punjab government at Government Medical College, Patiala. The state govt has spent Rs 56 lacs in establishing this lab for testing Covid 19 tests.

After inaugurating the lab, he interacted with the media. On asking about the increase in the fees of medical courses, he said” we increases the fees, after a long time, as from the last many years, no fees was hiked by the government. He further said that to make a full fledged doctor , the govt now takes only 7.50 lacs for around 5 years of his/ her studies. The cost to make a doctor comes to around thirty lacs and we increases our fees from 4.40 lacs to 7.50 lacs for full course.” He further informed that private medical university Adesh University was not following Punjab government instructions/ rules. So, we tabled an amendment bill and passed it in vidhan sabha and now decrease the Adesh University course fee from Rs. 65 lacs to 47 lacs” .

On the up gradation of viral research and diagnostic lab (VRDL) he said” now onwards the capacity of doing the tests increase 3000 in Patiala and 9000 daily tests in Punjab. He said Punjab govt has established three testing labs to do corona tests in Punjab and now the daily test enhances to 9000 tests”

Member parliament from Patiala Preneet Kaur joined the inauguration through video conferencing.
