Punjabi University, Patiala is starting six new ‘Five Year Integrated Post Graduate Programs’ from this   academic session 2021-22. Vice Chancellor Prof. Arvind said that these new courses are being introduced to adopt multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach in line with the new academic trends at the international level. He said that in present times, it is necessary that we move forward in education sector with this approach and redefine and redesign our fields of study on multidisciplinary lines. The new education policy too mentions that we move towards multidisciplinary education, he said.  The credit system being given importance all over the world fits well into this approach.

Talking about these new Integrated programs, he said that in fact we find Punjabi University as the most suitable place for such courses as a wide range of subjects are being taught here. The highly qualified Faculty here in all the subjects like science, engineering, social sciences, languages, business, journalism etc is the strength of this University.  The aim and objectives of the universities is to make their students employable as well as knowledgeable and learned. Both these aspects have been taken care of in the design of these new courses, he said.

Dr. Balvir Singh Sandhu, Dean Academic Affairs, told that these five year integrated courses have been started in six disciplines where students can get admission on merit basis after 10 + 2. These six fields are related to Physical and Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Social Sciences, Languages and Performing & Visual Arts. He said that these courses have been designed on  3 + 2 basis, meaning that if any student wants to leave after three years, he would be awarded a graduate degree in the relevant subject. Those who choose to complete full five years, will be able to get their Master’s degree from Punjabi University without any entrance test etc.

Dr. Sandhu told that these courses will cover the areas like Physical and Chemical Sciences: M.Sc. (Honours School) Physics and M.Sc. (Honours School) Chemistry; Biological Sciences: M.Sc. (Honours School) Biotechnology, M.Sc. (Honours School) Botany, M.Sc. (Honours School) Zoology and M.Sc. (Honours School) Human Genetics; Mathematical and Computational Sciences: M.Sc. Dr. Manjit Singh, Coordinator of the Admission Cell told that it’s very encouraging that a large number of students are showing interest in these courses.

The coordinators of the  courses  Dr. Surjit Singh, Dr. Himender Bharti, Dr. Shalini Gupta, Dr. Dr. Sanjeev Puri Nivedita Singh and Dr. D.K. Madan briefly introduced their respective courses.

They informed that in these courses the students would be free to study the subject as an elective subject if they are interested in a subject outside their field. For example, a physics student will have the freedom to pursue   music or theatre subjects too which will help them in their holistic development . In addition to the ‘elective subject’ option, each student will be required to take other subjects related to his/her subject for the first two semesters. For example, the students in the field of languages will be given basic knowledge of six languages like Punjabi, English, Hindi, Urdu etc. in the first year. Doing so we will instill in the students a basic understanding of all languages as well as help him to choose the right subject for his next years. They further  informed  that these new programs will surely create an environment for continuous interaction between the various faculties .

Dr. Varinder Kaushik,  Registrar and Dr. Happy Jeji, Director Public Relations were also present on this occasion.
