Society for People’s Welfare & Awareness Patiala (SPWAP) in collaboration with St. John Ambulance Brigade under the Indian Red Cross Society Patiala kick-started a campaign for “Blood, Body, and Organ Donation “from the School for Blind and Deaf Village Saifdipur in Patiala.

The school students and the staff along with other participants took a pledge under the leadership of Col. Karminder Singh to participate actively in the ongoing blood body and organ donation programme to make it a mass movement.

Speaking in the program, former Registrar of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences Faridkot Dr. Pyare Lal Garg said India is lagging behind in organ donation and there is a huge gap between the requirement and supply of human organs resulting in the death of five lakh people annually due to non-availability of human organs for transplantation. Criticizing the human organ trade and making it a business by a few people in violation of the law, he said human organs are not for sale but the best human gift from the dying and dead persons to the patients giving them a new lease of life.

President of the NGO Dr. DS Bhullar said lack of public awareness, superstitions, cultural and religious barriers, misinformation, strict laws, inefficient procurement and distribution systems, and lack of medical infrastructure are some of the major factors responsible for the poor response for organ donation in India.

The participants paid homage to the people who donated organs before death. Apart from the school staff, HS Kareer, Amarpreet Singh Dhillon, Jaspal Singh, Manjit Singh, and Pawan Mittal also participated in the program.
