In a press communiqué’ Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organizations (PFUCTO) expressed its solidarity with the protest by Govt College Teachers’ Association (GCTA) , Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) & Punjabi University Teachers’ Association (PUTA),Patiala on Teachers’ Day.
In a statement, Dr Jagwant Singh, General Secretary, Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organizations (PFUCTO) said that it is unfortunate that teachers have been forced to protest on this auspicious day. He pointed out that the benefit of the revised UGC Pay-scales announced by CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has not reached a single teacher of the government aided colleges of Punjab due to undue delay in pay fixations.
The teachers of government colleges have been pushed into a scheme where a single teacher has to look after a cluster of colleges that is leading to a severe deterioration in the standard of education provided.
This scheme violates the UGC Regulations for the award of the first degree as instructions prescribed by the UGC are not being followed in these government institutions. The salary crisis in Punjabi University, Patiala remains unresolved despite several assurances.
He urged CM Bhagwant Singh Mann to address these issues at the earliest to show that the government is truly committed towards taking care of education and is not making hollow promises and statements.
