PM to lay the foundation stone of PGI Satellite Centre at Ferozepur ; medical colleges

The central government is giving a renewed push to health infrastructure in the region.

Preparations are in full swing ahead of  Prime Minister  Narendra Modi’s visit to the border town of Ferozepur on January 5 for laying the foundation stone for PGIMER’s Satellite Centre at Ferozepur. Apart from this, the  Prime Minister will lay the foundation of two medical colleges in Punjab at Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala.

Banwari Lal Purohit,  Governor of Punjab, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya,  Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, and  Charanjit Singh Channi,  Chief Minister of Punjab will also have their august presence at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the PGIMER’ Satellite Centre by the  Prime Minister scheduled to take place at 1.00 pm on Wednesday, 5thJanuary 2021.

Under the scheme of “Establishment of New Medical Colleges attached with existing District/Referral hospitals” in various states, the central government has approved three medical colleges in the state of  Punjab. The first college sanctioned under the first phase of the scheme has already been approved and functional at Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar. The foundation of the other two medical colleges in Punjab at Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala will be laid down by the . Prime minister.  With a combined cost of 650 crores,  these two medical colleges will be imparting training to  200 MBBS candidates. It is anticipated that these two colleges would be ready within the next 2 years.

Secondly, the second PGI-satellite centerin Punjab after Sangrur is being planned in Ferozepur. Construction at the PGI-satellite centre in Sangrur is nearing completion and services in the hospital are anticipated to start shortly.

The center at Ferozepuris envisioned to start with 10 clinical branches and their allied specialties. There will be 100 indoor beds including ICUs and High dependency units for critically ill patients. It will also house minor and major operation theaters. The building will be constructed using the latest techniques and is proposed to be a platinum-rated green hospital.

The border belt of Punjab is set to benefit immensely from the operationalization of the PGI-Satellite center. With PGI’s expertise in the area of health and training, the center will get good mentorship in healthcare delivery. This outreach model of service to the public will benefit border districts in and around Ferozepur.Construction at both these centers is anticipated to finish by 2024.
