Power crises may loom over India: Coal stock critical at 78 domestic coal based thermal plants-Gupta

Coal stocks at 78 domestic coal based thermal plants across the country are in critical category or less than 25% of required stocks. . This is the first time in this financial year that critical coal stock is recorded in such a large number of thermal plants, said V K Gupta Spokesperson All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF).

The ministry of power  last month extended  mandated domestic coal-based power plants to blend 4% imported coal till March next year, earlier this was up to September end. With the mandate for imported coal based plants  to run at full capacity ending last month.

6 thermal plants running on imported coal also have critical coal stocks and these include Adani Mundra .Three thermal  plants running on imported coal have practically zero coal stock.

The mandatory coal stock required for every plant is for 20 days .  If the coal stocks get reduced to less than 25% of mandatory stock it becomes  critical.

As of October 11 , the national average coal stock at thermal power stations stood 38 per cent of the normative stock level , according to the CEA  report of coal stock .

Central Electricity Authority (CEA) monitors 181 coal based thermal plants and out of these 166 are operating on domestic coal and balance  15 operate on imported coal.

Amongst 78 thermal plants with critical coal  stock,  private sector plants have 24, NTPC 16, DVC 3,and 34 in the state sector. In Rajasthan all the seven thermal plants have critical coal stock of 2 to 14 percent.  All the six plants  in West Bengal , three each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, have critical coal stock. In Haryana Yamuna Nagar unit 2  and GVK in Punjab  are under shutdown due to coal problems. In Punjab private sector thermal plants at GVK and Talwandi Sabo have one and two days stock respectively

The highest peak power demand this year stands at 239.9 GW, which was recorded on 1 September. . On 10 October, the peak power demand reached 221.62 GW, with the peak shortage at 5.36 GW.
