Power Outage: Govt Rajindra Hospital ill preparedness to handle emergency situation comes to fore

On July 20, 2024 long power outage in Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala has open ill preparedness to handle emergency services.

Rajindra hospital power got snapped at around 8:00 pm in the evening and the hospital remained without electricity for around three hours. The fault is rectified at 11:00 pm and power was restored.

The power remained snapped for around 3 hours and during this period only few buildings which have generators backup remained functional. Rest most of the hospital area remained out of power due to non functional of DG sets.

As per available information, the 320 kVA generators of general wards, MCH building etc remained non functional due to non availability of diesel. Whereas the hospital authorities only managed to run the generators of emergency, super specialty building, ortho wing etc. whereas it failed to maintain, run other DG sets due to non availability of diesel on time.

MS Govt Rajindra Hospital Dr Girish Sahni said “we don’t have any store to keep the diesel. We have to buy it whenever it is needed. But, we managed to run our services efficiently in this situation.”

A Punjab state power corporation limited (PSPCL) officer said “a cable fault is detected at 66 KV grid from where the power is supplied to Government Rajindra Hospital. We acted immediately and replaced the faulty cable and restored the supply at the earliest.”

On the other hand a powercom officials said “ how rajindra hospital authorities has neglected the generators, whereas being emergency service all the DG sets should have been made operational. They failed to run their DG sets on time.”

As per available information even the doctors of Government Rajindra Hospital had to perform Caesarean section or C-section under the flashlight of mobile phones. The power supply of the hospital was disrupted when the C-section of the woman was underway. Due to power outage, relatives of patients started protesting in the hospital premises and raised slogan against the hospital authorities, administration.

On July 21,2024 evening health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh along with PSPCL CMD Er. Baldev Singh Saran, Director of Medical Education and Research Dr. Avnish Kumar, Medical Superintendent Girish Sahni, and officials from the PWD Electrical Wing held a meeting at Rajindra Hospital.

After the meeting Dr Balbir Singh stated that, following directives from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, obstacles hindering the power supply, which affect the quality of healthcare services, must be addressed. PSPCL has committed to installing an additional 11 KV line from the grid, supplementing the two existing lines, to prevent future power interruptions.

Dr. Singh also directed that sufficient extra diesel be kept on hand for emergency use in the hospital’s 20 generator sets. Furthermore, a joint team comprising officials from the PWD Electrical Wing and the Punjab State Power Corporation will be formed to promptly identify and address any deficiencies in the hospital’s power supply.

Power Outage: Govt Rajindra Hospital ill preparedness to handle emergency situation comes to fore. Meanwhile, taking cognigence, chief secretary Anurag Verma has asked the principal secretary power Tejveer Singh to look into the matter and fix the responsibility.
