In a first-of-its-kind development in the history of Punjab a situation has arisen when all the employees, pensioners of any government department, organization untidily came together to save their department.

Punjab’s power sector engineers, employees, and pensioners have formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) and resolved to wage a collective struggle on issues concerning the interests of employees, the state, and electricity consumers and to launch a united struggle against what they term “anti–power sector policies.

A joint meeting of various power department organizations was held in Patiala on December 22 to oppose the proposed sale of power corporation land, alleged hurdles in the installation of two 800 MW units at the Ropar Thermal Plant, and attempts to implement the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025.

Following the meeting, several bodies—including the PSEB Engineers Association, Council of Junior Engineers, Bijli Mulazam Sangharsh Morcha, Pensioners Association, IT Officers Association, HR Officers Association, and Accounts Association—formed the Joint Action Committee of Power Sector Employees, Engineers and Pensioners to collectively fight these issues.

  • January 9, 2026 – Patiala
  • January 15, 2026 – Ludhiana

Spokespersons Avtar Singh Kanth, Er. Amandeep Jehlvi, and Er. Jatinder Garg said that a major protest will also be held outside the Powercom Head Office in Patiala in the last week of January next year. They warned that if the government does not halt what they described as anti–power sector activities, employees, officers, and engineers would proceed on mass leave.

They highlighted that this is the first time engineers, employees, and pensioners have united under one platform, calling upon the general public to support the movement to protect Punjab’s public power sector in the larger public interest.
