PPCB staff to physically check Sugar Mills,Distilleries

Patiala-Taking serious note of leakage of molasses from Chadha Sugar Mills, Kiri Afgana, is district Gurdaspur, Punjab pollution Control Board Chairman Kahan Singh Pannu has directed the Environmental Engineer of Punjab Pollution Control Board to physically check the all the sugar mills and distilleries in Punjab, to ensure safe keeping of molasses.

In a recent incident Chadha Sugar Mills has discharge the polluted water in River Beas , resulting in death of aquatic life.

In a letter addressed to all the Environmental Engineers of Regional Offices of Punjab Pollution Control Board at SAS Nagar, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Amritsar, Faridkot, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Batala, Ludhiana (1 to 4), Kahan Singh Pannu, Chairman PPCB  said that ”you were directed to undertake inspections to all these mills immediately with a view to sensitize the management of these mills for safe upkeep of molasses storage points. In case, any deficiency is found in the proper upkeep of molasses storage, facilitates in these mills necessary action shall be taken at the spot under intimation to Head Office.”

Kahan Singh Pannu, Chairman Punjab Pollution Control Board further said that, “although, the board has been taking necessary action against the Chadha Sugar Mills and a high level enquiry is underway but the damage to waters of River Beas has been done.The PPCB is also taking various corrective measures to manage the impact of damage of aquatic life”
