Punjab State Medical & Dental Teachers Association (PSMDTA) has decided to oppose any move of the Government of India or the National Medical Commission for adjustment of the medical students coming from war affected Ukraine to complete their MBBS undergraduate courses in the state run medical colleges in Punjab.

In a joint press release, Dr. DS Bhullar, state president, Dr. Jaspreet Singh Kauldhar, state General Secretary and Dr. Darshanjit Singh Walia, state co-ordinator of the Association (PSMDTA) said, the association has full sympathy for the students who had to leave Ukraine without completing their medical courses and it is moral and ethical duty of the Indian authorities to take care of the future of these students on humanitarian grounds but not at the cost of the meritorious students undergoing their undergraduate courses in the state run medical colleges.

The students and the faculty of these government institutes cannot afford such large burden of students which will not only adversely affect their own courses and teaching but will also leave demoralizing effect on them for entry of such candidates who could not compete with them in NEET and had to opt for paid degrees abroad. This will in fact be a backdoor entry for completing MBBS courses from Government medical colleges in Punjab. It would be unfair to the students who had to take Ayurveda or homeopathy by appearing in the same entrance tests and the students coming from Ukraine could not join MBBS courses in India because they were behind in merit but now trying to join MBBS. Moreover the government medical colleges have no sitting space for their own students as the laboratories and lecture theatres meant for 150 students are being used to accommodate 230 students.

The government medical colleges and the faculty in Punjab should not be bound to adjust and teach these medical students as these institutes are not getting any grant or monetary assistance from the Central Government.

It is the right time that the Indian government must learn a lesson from the Ukraine Russia war and the Covid pandemic and should increase the health budget along with increase in government medical colleges and medical seats for better health care and better chances for the young generation who wants to serve the society by opting medical streams, said the association leaders.
