PSPCL met increased power demand in June; power supply increased by 24 percent in June 2024

Power demand in Punjab and Haryana rose around 5 per cent in June 2024 as compared to June last year. The maximum power demand touched 16089 MW on June 29 in Punjab, while it was 14394 MW on June 19 in Haryana. Last year the maximum daily demand in Punjab was 15325 MW and while in Haryana it was 13055 MW.
Due to intense heat waves and practically no rain in June ,the average daily supply by PSPCL has also increased by around 24 percent to 2918 LU per day against last year’s supply of 2352 lakh units per day. The maximum daily power supply made by PSPCL is 3572 LU on June 26 this year while the daily power supply done by PSPCL last June was 3425 LU on May 23.
According to details procured from Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, the average daily power supply in the state in June was 2918 lakh units , comprising 370 LU from thermal plants and 170 LU from hydro projects.
“According to available data, the maximum daily power demand in Haryana increased by 10 percent over last year’s demand of 13,055 MW as this year it has already touched 14394 MW in June. The demand may touch 14,500 MW in the coming hot and humid period, according to experts. The power supply by Haryana power utilities this year in June is around 77960 LU ,an increase of 27 percent over last year’s supply of around 61590 LU” said AIPEF spokesperson VK Gupta.

Punjab has seen a consistent rise in the demand for power for the last four months The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited has already touched 16089 MW in June in the first 15 days of paddy season, but this may cross 16,500-MW mark in the coming month.
A senior officer of the corporation said that with increased withdrawals from the northern grid and adequate power purchases, all power consumers in Punjab have been provided uninterrupted power supply without power cuts till date during the season.
The coal stock at all three state-run plants is available for 19 days at Lehra Mohabbat thermal , 16 days at Ropar thermal and 14 days at Goindwal thermal. In the private sector, the Rajpura thermal plant has 28 days’ coal stock while the Talwandi Sabo thermal plant has 4 days’ coal stock.
