Punjab Chief Minister accepted protesters demand; announces state govt decision on Zira factory in Ferozepur

A few minutes ago, Punjab  Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered the closure of Marlboro liquor manufacturing project, controversial Zira factory in Ferozepur district with immediate effect for preserving the environment of the state.

Bhagwant Mann said: “No one will be allowed to spoil the air of Punjab… Therefore, after consulting legal experts, a big decision has been taken in public interest… I have issued orders to close the Zira Liquor Factory and in the future even if anyone tries to spoil the environment, they will not be spared.”

Farm unions have been protesting over alleged pollution caused by an ethanol plant in Zira (Ferozepur district) for the last many months. They have been alleging that the liquor factory was allegedly causing serious damage to underground water, air and environment.

Punjab Chief Minister accepted protesters demand; announces state govt decision on Zira factory in Ferozepur. Announcing the scrapping of this project, the Chief Minister categorically said that no one, however affluent he may be, will not be allowed to take the environmental norms for granted. He said that whoever will flout the stipulated norms framed by the state government will be dealt with sternly. Bhagwant Mann said that the decision has been taken after due deliberations with environmental experts and legal luminaries.

The Chief Minister said that keeping in view the castigating effects of this project on the environment and ecology of the state this project has been shelved. Bhagwant Mann said that the project could have disturb the ecological balance of the area. He said that keeping in view the repercussions of this project on the environment and human life, the state government has decided to wind up with immediate effect

The Chief Minister reiterated the firm commitment of the state government to check the environmental pollution for making Punjab clean, green and pollution free. He unequivocally said that no one will be allowed to play havoc with the environmental conditions of the state. Bhagwant Mann said that he will take every step to ensure the well being of the state and its people.
