The move to appoint a new Director General of Police (DGP) has been further delayed by one month as the Supreme Court hear an urgent application and allowed present DGP, Suresh Arora to work till January 31, 2019. Suresh Arora got one month extension as he is due to retire on December 31, 2018, after three months extension.

A recent Supreme Court judgment directed the states to send a panel of senior officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which will shortlist three officers of whom the state will select the top cop.

Punjab had moved the application on November 30 along with Bihar in urgency as Punjab police chief, DGP Suresh Arora, is retiring on December 31 after a three month-extension.
