Punjab govt appoints PPS officer as SSP of a border district

Punjab govt has appointed Gurmit Singh, PPS as the new senior superintendent of police (SSP) , Fazilka in place of Varinder Singh Brar, PPS.
The Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government on Wednesday placed the Fazilka district police chief, Varinderpal Singh Brar, under suspension with immediate effect. As per reports, the state government has suspended the SSP Fazilka, Varinder Singh Brar on corruption charges.
Earlier, on May 26 the Punjab Vigilance Bureau had arrested four cops in Fazilka for taking a bribe from a minor boy over some videos in his phone, the Punjab government on Wednesday suspended SSP Fazilka Varinder Brar in the case.
The scandal came to light when a Fazilka resident presented evidence to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s anti-corruption helpline against the cops of the Cyber Crime police station in Fazilka who demanded Rs 1 lakh to resolve a complaint involving the confiscation of the minor’s phone.
Despite the family’s repeated attempts to resolve the issue through legal means, they were coerced into paying the bribe. The arrested officials include the SHO, a reader and two constables.
