“To control the ‘menace of crime from inside jails’, Punjab govt is going to install Artificial Intelligence based CCTV Surveillance System in eight central Jails in Punjab” said a source on the condition of anonymity.

For 24X7 monitoring of Central Jail, Amritsar, Central Jail, Ferozpur, Central Jail, Gurdaspur , Central Jail, Patiala, Central Jail, Faridktot, Central Jail, Kapurthala, Central Jail, Ludhiana, Central Jail, Bathinda , the jail department has sought to upgrade their video surveillance solution to improve image quality and retention time. They also wanted to maximize field of view to deliver a more forceful and expansive –yet, less intrusive – solution. For this purpose, the Punjab government has asked the Punjab police housing corporation to handle this important project.

The primary objective is to have a complete coverage of the area with an extensive network of CCTV cameras. It is desired that the entire prison premises should not have any blind spots. However, there are practical and operational challenges to having zero blind spots, the same can be addressed during installation of the cameras.

As per sources, “the Central Jails is surrounded by densely populated areas, college campus etc. The Jails authority is faced with a herculean task of maintaining the integrity of the wall which is breached at several places and from which anti-social elements throw substance into the jail and carry out their dubious activities. To add to this problem the road that runs adjacent to the wall is frequently used by people that come into the Jail and who wish to intrude into the prison premises. With complete coverage of jail perimeter with CCTV, it is envisaged that monitoring and management of jails and the activities can take place more effectively, efficiently and in a more coordinated manner. CCTVs are expected to become the extended arm for the security to help and take the burden of 24×7 manual guarding of the Jail premises.”

As per available information, the jail department has demanded the “jail premises to have state-of-the-art Al based surveillance system comprising of high definition IP cameras, video management and analytics software. It will help to ensure highly effective physical security surveillance operations with accurate flow of information and communication”.

As per sources the department has selected entrance/ exit gate, both inner and outer boundaries, inside roads, main gate to Deodi Pathway, Deodi inner Main-gate to Central Tower pathway, Central Tower to Barracks/Cells Pathway etc., buildings including Gurdwara Sahib, Temple, Masjid, Amphitheater, Hospital, Isolation Dell, Canteen, Visitor Room, Langar, Open Public Space, Gardens ,Playground, Parking ,Security Cell, Barracks, Corridor, High Security Zone ,Cells ,Admin Building, Deodi Outside, Deodi Area, Deodi Administration Building for installation of AI based CCTV Surveillance System.

The department is also going to check the ‘Camera Tampering’ and has planned to secure the system that can detect the tampering like if someone defocuses the camera lens, if someone moves the camera from its FOV, if someone put the cloth on camera, if someone covers the camera lens with hand, if someone put the torch light flash on camera, if someone put spray on camera lens, immediately
