Punjab, Haryana put on high alert, security tightened in Chandigarh after blast near Red Fort in Delhi

A Red Alert was sounded across Punjab, Haryana on Monday evening following a powerful explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi that claimed eight lives and left several others injured, officials said. The security in the union territory of Chandigarh has also been tightened.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said that a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light outside the Red Fort at 6:52 p.m. when an explosion occurred in that vehicle.
“In the wake of the blast in New Delhi, a Red Alert has been issued across all districts in Punjab,” said a spokesperson for the Punjab Police Department. Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure maximum vigilance, the spokesperson added.
Police personnel have been deployed at sensitive and vulnerable locations, while vehicle checks and surveillance of suspicious individuals have been intensified across the state.
According to Delhi Police officials, a high-intensity explosion ripped through a car parked near the Red Fort metro station on Monday evening, setting several nearby vehicles ablaze. At least eight people were killed and 24 others sustained injuries in the incident, which occurred during a busy hour when the area was crowded with commuters and tourists.
The injured have been rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, located a few kilometres away.
Authorities in Delhi have also sounded a high alert and are investigating the cause of the blast.
