The Punjab Language Department hosted an engaging and thought-provoking session at Bhasha Bhavan, Patiala, under the theme “Current Status of Punjabi Language, Culture, and Media Abroad.” The keynote speaker was Gurshaminder Singh Mintu Brar, a distinguished Punjabi cultural ambassador based in Australia. The session was presided over by Director of Languages, Jaswant Singh Zafar.

In his address, Mintu Brar highlighted that Punjabi is being taught across all Australian states, with active support from the Australian government. He noted that this backing extends beyond education to cultural initiatives, helping the diaspora stay connected with its roots. Notably, he shared that Australia is home to the development of the first two Punjabi mobile apps—Suhavi and Virsa—which provide audio and text-based literary and educational content to Punjabi-speaking audiences worldwide.

Brar also reflected on key milestones in the Punjabi digital journey abroad. He initiated Punjabi blogging in Australia in 2007 and cited the digitization of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib by Gurwant Singh Uppal (Perth), the creation of a Punjabi font by Balwant Singh, and the establishment of Harman Radio—one of the earliest online Punjabi radio platforms.

Discussing the role of sports and community events, Brar mentioned the Sikh Games, launched 37 years ago in Australia, which continue to be held annually as a celebration of Punjabi identity and unity. He also noted the widespread popularity of Punjabi TV channels, radio stations, and newspapers in Australia—enthusiastically supported by both older and younger generations.

He praised the Australian government’s inclusive multicultural policies, which offer not only freedom of cultural expression but also generous grants that empower communities to preserve their heritage.

Director Jaswant Singh Zafar lauded Brar’s efforts, calling him a tireless global ambassador of Punjabi language and culture. “Rather than focusing on what others do, we must ask ourselves what we are contributing to the world,” said Zafar. “Mintu Brar embodies the spirit of humility, purpose, and cultural pride. His work offers inspiration to all.”

As a mark of appreciation, the department presented Mintu Brar with a ceremonial shawl and a set of books.
