Punjab Police IG relieved, setback for SIT investigating Babhel Kalan incident

The Election Commission of India (ECI) today ordered that Punjab Police Inspector General Police Kunwar Vijay Sing, be relieved as a member of the Special Investigation Team formed by Punjab Govt. According to the orders issued by Rahul Sharma, Secretary Election Commission, he would not be given any duty related to elections.
On March 22, SAD Member Parliament of Rajya Sabha Naresh Gujral, approached Election Commission of India and demanded the immediate removal of Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh as member of the Special Investigating Team set up by the Punjab Government . In his complaint SAD stated that “Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh gave a politically motivated interview to a TV channel about the ongoing investigation by SIT and has made certain political comments.”
Election Commission examined the matter and observed that the contents of the part of the interview has political connotations and has the potential to show certain political leaders in poor light. The officer also mentioned the name of leaders of SAD which is clearly in violation of the provision of Model Code of Conduct.”
The commission has further decided that all the member of SIT may be directed not to air such contents in future during the period of Model Code of Conduct which will affect the fairness of the conduct of electrol process.
