Punjab Police Promotions: already top heavy Punjab police gets 8 more officers in its force

Today, the state government has promoted 8 Punjab police IPS officers. According to a home department rules, IPS officers have a vertical tenure-based promotion system in accordance with IPS cadre rules. On the completion of their time in service, the state government has promoted 8 IPS officers to their next rank. Anyone who has served 25 and 18 years in service is eligible to become a ADGP and IG, respectively, in Punjab.

The government has promoted one IG ranked Officer Dinesh Partap Singh of 2000 batch to ADGP rank. Presently Dinesh Partap Singh is on central deputation and is Director, cabinet Sectt., Govt of India at New Delhi.

Similarly the state government has promoted 2 DIGs as Inspector General of Police (IGPs) and 5 senior superintendent of police (SSPs) / Assistant Inspector General (AIGs) to DIGs.

With this promotion the Punjab police will have 26 ADGP ranked officer in its force. These 26 ADGPs are from 1994-2000 batch IPS officers. Out of these 26, 4 officers-Kapil Dev, Rajiv Ahir, Parveen Kumar Rai and Rakesh Aggarwal are on central deputation. IGPs Gautam Cheema and Paramraj Singh Ummrangal are not promoted due to issues in their service and are out of these 26 ADGPs.

Out of these 26 ADGPs, 8 are waiting for their next promotion as DGP. The government has not cleared the time bound promotion of these 1994 batch IPS officers from ADGP to DGPs. Those ADGPs who are waiting for their promotions to DGPs are Dr Naresh Kumar, Ram Singh, SS Srivastava, V Neerja, Amardeep Singh Rai, Parveen Kumar Sinha, B Chandra Sekhar and Anita Punj.

Similarly, the state government has 9 IG ranked officers. Out of these 9, 3 officers namely Kaustubh Sharma, Ashish Choudhary, Harsh Kumar Bansal are on central deputation and rest are working in Punjab. Now, after today’s promotion, the Punjab police will have 11 IGP ranked officer in its force.

The elite Punjab police have 23 DIGs , including some of those are on central deputation,. With today’s five more officer, the tally of DIG reached a figure of 28.
