A Tribute: Punjab to have second University in the name of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji

Today, on an idea mooted by the National Convener of AAP Arvind Kejriwal, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday announced to set up a world class university after the name of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji at Sri Anandpur Sahib. He said that the university will act as a catalyst to undertake extensive research on supreme sacrifice, life and philosophy of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that this will help in inspiring the coming generations besides perpetuating the life and philosophy of great Guru sahib ji.

This is the second university in Punjab to be named after Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. Earlier ‘Sri Guru Teg Bahadur State University of Law, Tarn Taran’ was established in the year 2020 to commemorate the 400th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji.
But, till date Sri Guru Teg Bahadur State University of Law, Tarn Taran is not fully functional. After the establishment of the law university, the govt had given the charge of vice chancellor, registrar to the vice chancellor and registrar of Guru Nanak Dev University. They failed to make the university functional in five years.

The Punjab Cabinet on August 25,2020 had paved the way for the establishment of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur State University of Law, Tarn Taran to commemorate the 400th Birth Anniversary of the Ninth Sikh Guru Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, was announced by former Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh during the Budget Session of the Vidhan Sabha.
The draft Bill, prepared by the Department of Higher Education, seeks “to establish and incorporate a State University for the development and advancement of legal education and for the purposes of imparting specialized and systematic instruction, training and research in the field of law and for the matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.”
The foundation stone of the university was laid on August 27, 2021 by than Chief Minister, Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh. Necessary approval from the Bar Council of India, University Grants Commission, New Delhi was obtained under the Act 2-F to establish Sri Guru Teg Bahadur State University of Law, Tarn Taran. As per the plan, the University is going to run LLB. (TYC), B.A. LL.B (FYIC), BBA LLB (FYIC) and B.Com LL.B (FYIC) classes from the current academic session 2021-22.
As per the plan, Government of Punjab had sanctioned Rs.5.00 Crore for the University budget from which a sum of Rs.159.10 Lakhs was released to the University in the Financial Year 2020-21 and for the Financial Year 2021-22 Rs.7.00 Crore had been allocated to the University.
