Punjab water resources department deputes PWRMDC engineers in the fields to help in managing floods

To strengthen the working of drainage department during the prevailing situation of floods, Punjab water resources department principal secretary, Krishan Kumar, IAS has issued an orders and asked the executive engineers, sub divisional officers, junior engineers of Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation (PWRMDC) to immediately report to their nearest superintending engineer drainage -cum-mining and geology circle, water resource department.

As per the orders, the engineers of Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation (PWRMDC), a wing of water resources department were asked to help their counterpart of drainage circles in controlling, managing the floods in the state.

An officer on the condition of anonymity said, “the engineers of Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation (PWRMDC) remains free in these three months of paddy season as they have no work to do. The engineers of PWRMDC remain busy in rest of the year as they make the “Khaal’s” (which take the water from one farm field to other farm or a small canal in farm fields) before the paddy season so that water can reach in every field and to repair them after the season.”

Punjab water resources department deputes PWRMDC engineers in the fields to help in managing floods. “In this hour of crises, the department needs the workforce to utilize their, expertise, services. That’s why they were asked to report the drainage wing of the department” said another officer.

About PWRMDC

Punjab State Tubewell Corporation (now Punjab Water Resources Management & Development Corporation) was incorporated in December, 1970 with the main objectives of utilization of ground water resources in the State of Punjab thereby providing irrigation facilities to the farmers through installation of deep tubewells in the most backward kandi area of the State which is devoid of other means if irrigation due to deep water table and difficult underground geological formations. In the year February, 2008 the objects and functions of the company broadened and accordingly the name of the company was changed from Punjab State Tubewell Corporation to Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation and a fresh certificate of incorporation was issued.
