Punjabi University and IWM join forces to empower Women in Math: 10-Day workshop ignited with book launch

In a landmark collaboration, Punjabi University and the Indian Women in Mathematics (IWM) today kickstarted a 10-day workshop promising to unlock the power of numbers and shape the future with mathematics, particularly for aspiring women mathematicians. Aptly titled “Unlocking the Power of Numbers: Shaping the Future with Mathematics,” the workshop buzzed with excitement as students, researchers, and enthusiasts embarked on a transformative journey.
The grand opening ceremony, held at 9:30 am under the esteemed chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Arvind, reverberated with the call to break gender barriers in the world of mathematics. Dr. Arvind, in his keynote address, highlighted the omnipresent applications of mathematics in our daily lives, urging participants to embrace its potential for shaping a brighter future. He particularly emphasized the fascinating world of topology, a branch that delves into the properties of shapes and spaces, sparking curiosity among the audience.
Adding to the ceremony’s grandeur was Dr. Gurmeet Kaur Bakshi, a renowned mathematician and member of the workshop’s scientific organizing committee. Representing IWM, Dr. Bakshi captivated the audience with the organization’s inspiring story, showcasing its unwavering commitment to empowering women in mathematics. The ceremony witnessed the much-anticipated launch of a thought-provoking book authored by Dr. Surrinder Singh Kainth, further enriching the intellectual landscape of the event.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Arvind’s message resonated with hope and encouragement. He urged participants to embrace the workshop as a springboard for intellectual growth and to dream big without letting gender barriers impede their progress. Head of the Department, Professor Parveen Lata, warmly welcomed guests, briefly introducing the department’s rich history and expertise. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to IWM for providing this incredible opportunity and acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the local organizing committee comprising Dr. Deepak Kumar, Dr. Rupali, and Reetu.
