Punjabi university Botany department celebrated National Science Day

Department of Botany, Punjabi University, Patiala in association with Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh organized a function on the occasion of National Science Day on 09-03-2022.

In this function, Dr. Neelima Jairath, Director General, Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala graced the occasion as the keynote speaker and Prof. Arvind, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala was the Chief Guest. Prof. Davinder Pal Singh, Head, Department of Botany in his welcome address said that this function has been organized in continuation of the fortnight celebrated by Punjabi University, Patiala on the occasion of Science week to commemorate 75th Anniversary of Independence.

He also said that the internationally recognized facilities in the Botany Department have always been the centre of attraction for researchers and students and during the science week more than 5000 visitors got information about the various facilities of the department.

Prof. Munruchi Kaur, Dean of Life Sciences introduced Dr. Neelima Jairath to the audience. During the function, Dr. Jairath shared her views on the topic of “Retrospects and Prospects in Biodiversity conservation”. In her address, Dr. Jairath discussed in detail the different levels of biodiversity, its importance and contribution to the balance of the environment. She said that the present biodiversity of the earth is facing various threats.The most important reason for these dangers is the anthropogenic activities. If these activities are not stopped in time, a large part of the biodiversity will disappear soon. She also discussed the efforts being made at international and national level for the conservation of biodiversity.

Prof. Arvind, Vice-Chancellor, in his inaugural address said that conservation of biodiversity is essential for sustainable development. He also said that such research work would be initiated soon through the Centre for Restoration of Ecosystem of Punjab set up by Punjabi University, Patiala. He also lauded the contribution of Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala in making the science interesting.

Punjabi university Botany department celebrated National Science Day. At the end of the event, Prof. Jasvirinder Singh Khattar thanked the Speaker, Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala and the university administration for making this event a success.
