Punjabi University developes technique to identify real expressions from facial images; also useful in case of low-resolution images

Punjabi University has developed an effective technique to identify real expressions from facial images. This has been made possible through a recent research by researcher Naveen Kumari under the supervision of Prof. Rekha Bhatia at the Department of Computer Science.
Prof. Rekha Bhatia while talking about it, said that communicating through facial emotions is a kind of non-verbal communication and it reflects a person’s inner thoughts, human behaviour, and mental states. Facial expression plays a big role in judging the emotions of an individual human being. She said that this technology is very useful in applications related to many fields like healthcare, teaching, criminal investigation, human robot interface etc. She said that every application already available in this matter has its own challenges. The main goal of the technology brought out through this research was to overcome these challenges in terms of identifying human emotions such as happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger, disgust etc.
She said that the purpose of this technique is to increase the accuracy of expression recognition by being useful in the case of low-resolution i.e. poor quality facial images.
She said that the various facial expression recognition technology models currently in this field perform poorly in the case of images that have low visual quality. To deal with these problems, through this research a CNN based approach is used. The model thus developed has achieved better accuracy compared to existing approaches.
Researcher Naveen Kumari said the proposed technology has several unique applications that could contribute to making the world a better place. Sales and monitoring, product designing, etc., have a lot of potential in this technology. This study could have a major positive impact in areas such as healthcare and online education. This technology has many applications related to healthcare, including knowing the response of patients to medication and previous medication based on their facial expressions, and detecting any type of emergency in patients. Similarly, real-time feedback from students studying online, through their feedback, can be very helpful in improving the quality of educators. In this respect, this technique can be helpful in recognizing the real feelings of the students. Apart from this, This technology can also be useful in many other tasks that contribute to the betterment of society by studying human behavior with the help of A.I.
